Pawn History
Pawnbroking is humankind's oldest financial institution, even older than banking! Pawnbroking can be traced back 3,000 years to ancient China. It has also been a form of financing even in ancient Greece and Rome. The word "pawn" stems from the Latin word "patinum" (meaning clothing). Pawn broking can be seen throughout the centuries, when even kings would pawn their crown jewels to fund wars! St. Nicholas (Santa Claus) became known as the patron saint of pawnbroking. The three gold balls that St. Nicholas is seen to hold represents the gold given to provide dowries for impoverished maidens. The golden balls became the pawnbrokers' symbol.
